What Is Gelato? Gelato is fresh Italian ice cream. It differs from traditional ice cream in ingredients, consistency and flavor. Milk based gelato contains one-third the fat when compared to ice cream and less sugar. The fruit based gelato, or sorbetto, has almost no fat at all, and no dairy ingredients. Young’s makes our gelato daily to maximize the intense flavor and unique texture. Young’s Delicious Homemade Gelato has a smooth, fine and velvety texture. It’s gentle to the palate. The sensation of Young’s Delicious Homemade Gelato in the mouth is a delicious melting, pleasant and delectable. A cone or cup of gelato is a great snack. Milkshakes and sundaes made from the combinations of flavors are heavenly and almost limitless in variety. |
Gelato doesn’t have as much air as regular ice cream. That makes the flavors more intense. Gelato is less frozen than ice cream – we store and dip it at about 5 degrees above zero. Ice cream is stored at about 10 degrees below zero.
What Is Sorbetto?
Sorbetto is a dairy free version of gelato. It uses fruit juices, concentrates, and fresh fruit for its intense and wonderful flavor. Sorbetto flavors are unlike anything you’ve had. We especially like them on a cone or in a cup by themselves, but let your imagination go to create taste combinations with other gelato or sorbetto flavors.
A Brief History of Gelato
Gelato dates back to the 16th century where it was introduced in the Florentine court of Francesco de Medici by Bernardo Buontalenti. For a couple of centuries, it was the province of the royal families. Fortunately, the recipes and techniques eventually became known to the general public. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to travel to Italy, every city you visit will have many gelateria (retail gelato shops) on almost every street corner. These gelateria are part of the fabric of Italian life. The very best gelato is made by skilled artisans that have learned their craft over several years. Italians approach the making of gelato with the same dedication and creativity that an artist possesses. The resulting product is pleasing both to the eye and to the taste buds. You don’t just eat gelato, you experience it! At Young’s, we strive to deliver our American version of this experience, in the passion we put into our product and the tastes and flavors you experience.

Young’s Delicious Homemade Gelato is made in a batch freezer, where two to four gallons of gelato is made at a time, or batch. The base mixture is first prepared, using either milk for the dairy based gelato, or water and fruit juice for the sorbetto, non-dairy flavors. After the base mix is poured in, additional fruits, nuts, chocolate or other natural flavors are added. Sometimes, we also add ‘chunky’ things like chocolate chips, whole nuts or pieces of candy. About 10 to 12 minutes after starting the batch, the gelato is ready. |
|
We then draw the gelato out of the batch freezer, and then add garnishes and even more flavors to make our gelato the best you’ve ever had. As you can see, it’s a real artisan product, made a batch at a time. You will not be disappointed!
Of course, we have made all of our homemade ice cream for over 20 years, so we have plenty of experience. You can see where we make our homemade ice cream by walking over to the white building just south of The Dairy Store. This building is actually where our very first store was 40 years ago, and has been used in the past two decades as our ice cream manufacturing building.
