What did you think about this year's ride overall? |
Next |
Excellent
Wonderful! The course was great, the rest areas were perfectly placed with great treats and such nice people working at them, the sags did a great job. The dorms were amazing. It's criminal that college kids live that well!
Great ride! I really enjoyed the weekend.
Excellent
This was my 3rd year and I like this one the best. Best route, best support.
I enjoed the ride except for the hills. The ones that were rolling...down so you could get some speed to carry you some of the way up were fine. The ones that went straight up were very hard and zapped your energy. Food, accomodations and stops were great!
very nice
Great route - challenging for recreational riders, but great for the more than casual riders. Great accommodations. Great rest-stop support.
Outstanding! It was my first group, overnight ride. Couldn't have been a better first experience.
Overall I thought that this years ride was very good.
We really enjoyed the ride. What really makes this ride so enjoyable are the volunteers. They always have such a pleasant and uplifting attitude and that really makes a difference especially on the return home when your legs are rubber, your butt is numb and you know you still have a lot of hills yet to climb. It's nice to see their smiling faces.
Excellent
I really enjoyed it. Your support is super and it is appreciated. Thanks for organizing it, this was my first time participating in the Young's Dairy ride.
It was a very challenging ride, but I absolutely loved it. This was my 3rd year of participation, and as usual I found every aspect of th tour to be Top Notch! I am looking forward to next year already.
I thought it was a great event, I was able to appreciate from a charity support point of view and as a rider on day two. The support is great.
very good
Excellent!! I've done the Youngs ride ( this MC100) since it started, and the MS150 before that. This was the best overall ride. Nice route and great accommodations.
Outstanding
It was a blast! It was my first long ride, also, and I had no idea how it would play out. I felt like a kid again, riding in the country.
I truly enjoyed the ride. This was the first year that I participated in the Young's Dairy Charity Bike Tour. It was a challenging route but I liked the challenge of 'rolling hills.' The accomodations in Ada were awesome. The volunteers were great and very helpful.
This is the first year I did the Young's Dairy ride. I really liked it. I was most impressed with how friendly everyone was. It felt like family. I would definitely ride again.
The scenery and the flow.
Welll Done
This was my first organized ride and I thought it was great. The route was a little tougher then I was expecting but now I know what I need to work on. I thought all the support was great. The motor bikes were great and the ham operators made me feel safe as I rode. I need to get a little fast so I can meet a few more of the riders and have more time at the over night stop. Can't wait to make it again next year.
Scenic, but need to inform riders of the numerous rolling hills that go on and on, not a ride for beginners like the previous year.
Thought it was great!`
as always an excellent we ll supported ride
a lovely ride to towns I'd never seen before. well-organized, and everyone seemed to be taken care of.
Excellent! one of the best organized, best supported, best prepared tour in which I have participated. volunteers were amazing. Road support was a 10!
thoroughly enjoyed the event
EXCELLENT!!
Wonderful!!!!
The riders, all the volunteers, and I liked the new route this year, and the beds at ONU were really comfortable..
My first organized ride. Great for a beginner. Extremely well organized and supported. Was a lot of fun.
The level of support was excellent. Great weather, great fellowship among riders. Great food for lunches and stops, great cause!
This is by far the best organized ride in which I participate throughout the year. I can't say enough about the food, the route, the people, the volunteers. I was completely spent on Sunday, but felt richer for the experience.
Awesome !!! Once again the committee did a great job. The move to JDRF was a very positive one. Their group was very excited and the rest stop was fun, plus they brought more riders to the event.
I thought the ride was much prettier and more diverse then last year. I also thought it was much more strenuous with all the hills then last year. That would have been fine, except it wasn't expected so there seemed to be many riders who struggled and then cut their ride short. This caused issues as far as getting riders and bikes from lunch to final destination.
You ordered the best weather. The support was just as good. The rest stops well-managed. The people were all polite and nice.
I am so impressed by the amount of support we, as riders, received along the way. I felt the route was well marked, except one spot where quite a few went the wrong way, including me! Overall, I would say thank you for a job well done.
Well organized; Created an environment that made it enjoyable to raise funds for charities. Weather was fantastic for the 2nd year in a row Should have quite a number of returning riders who, after a positive experience this year, will pull other riders (and funds) into the mix.
Perfect. I rode the one in 2003 and got lost. This one was well marked, organized and had visible participants monitoring who was there and who was not.
Overall, I thought the ride was very good. It was my first offical ride and I was very impressed with the support given to the riders.
Excelent
Very good ride
Good ride support- the food/rest stops were well stocked. I saw many motorcycles on the way out to the second rest stop, on the way home there I don't recall seeing any staff on the road.
Great
Great ride, Great support, loved the new location.
LOVED IT!
I thought it was great.
ride was fine. I liked the diversity of scenery, hills, flat areas. Last year was boring. People will complain of hills, but the truth is, it was challenging but fun at the same time and I'm not an incredible rider.
I particularly like that you arranged for near perfect weather. I also liked the rollers in the southern portion of the ride. Accommodations were greatly improved from last year.
great!
Ride was even better than prior years. It was a better & more challenging route. The sit down meal Saturday night was a vast improvement over eating on paper plates in the quad in Delaware
Fantastic
fantastic support, food, accomodations, people and route.
Great. Love the new route.
The best fund raising ride I have done in 5 years. Great course, great support.......everyone was very kind and seemed to go out of the way to say Welcome and Thanks!
Best Ride I have every been on
Fabulous!!!!!!
I thought the ride was great! This was our first time and we'll definitely be back next year.
Was great. Support is always great, and this year was no exception.
Great experience. A ride I definitely want to do again. It was such a good experience, I smile writing these comments.
I thought it was great!
great
I thought the ride was outstanding. There was an added challenge with all the rolling hills which made the ride interesting and fun. Great route Grant!
Excellent, can't wait for next year's ride. The comraderie was great and I made alot of new cycling friends and hope to ride with them for the rest of this season and the start of next. Next year's Jersey should be a Yellow & Kelly Green color scheme.
Simply the best bike tour/rally weekend for the money, bar-none!
I really enjoyed it ... the route, the friends, food, and accomodations. Well planned and organized.
It was awesome.
I think it was very hard.
the ride was awesome. it was my first big ride and i cant wait for next year. even though i did make a few wrong turns...
It was excellent! The accomodations were fabulous.
This was our first year and first organized ride ever. My husband and I really enjoyed it.
Great support and well organized
Great course & well marked.
AWESOME
Very good. Must be really nice, smart, dedicated people behind this whole operation.

We endeavor to continuously improve the Young's ride. What suggestions do you have for us? Please ... |
Next |
Maybe I misread it, but the information on the website was not really accurate. The "MapMyRide" maps didn't really indicate which of the stops was for lunch. Some of the folks in my group thought the 46 mile stop was for lunch, so 61 miles really surprised them.
I think, on the course, when we were coming up to a turn (intersection) the arrows could have been marked a bit earlier....but that's not that big of a deal...just a suggestion. Next year let's get paint that is not so close to the same color. There were also a couple of guys working intersections that I wasn't sure quite knew what their job was supposed to be. They weren't really waving us through. Maybe a little more instruction on what their purpose is. That was only a couple of the areas.
I think we could use more ice for our water bottles at the rest stops.
I really don't know a lot about the charities. You might want to provide more of an opportunity for them to explain what they do.
I would like to signs posted at each stop saying how far to the next stop and maybe a detailed map of the roads you will be traveling. Some of the "Y"'s painted on the road were a little confusing. I know of a few people who went the wrong way and had to turn back.
well... The main route was so nice that it made the power loop seem dull by comparison
There was at least one intersection that should have been "manned" by the motorcycle troops. Not sure of the location, but a couple of close calls came at that intersection, with one cyclist going down and banging up her elbow enough to have to give up the ride not more than a mile or so from the intersection (couldn't continue). Not all the "road guards" actively helped with spotting/checking for traffic - which is fine if you are an experienced roadie, but for the casual riders, the road guards should have been up prepared to stop the riders or wave them through. I think we all still appreciated them being there - AS Volunteers - just in case ...
This one's tough but...maybe at least two port-a-potties at each break stop.
No suggestions
Have atleast 2 portapottys at each stop if that is the only way to relieve yourself. The first stop on the first day caused a back up and delay for those who wanted a shorter break. Everyone was patient and understanding as you waited in line. An earlier start time may help with not having to ride in the heat of the day.
A few less hills is about all I can think of...................... but even if it's exactly the same, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
As the ride grows, it seems the sag needs do too. I don't have a solution for that, since the task involves room to transport both riders and thier bikes. Maybe we can look into some more support for that next year.
84 miles per day is a lot for many riders, I like the idea of the power loop to get to 100 for those who want to. Perhaps in the future the ride could be 50 +/- miles per day with longer optional loops. I have done a few GOBAS in the past and notice they atract a much more diverse group of riders. The 84 miles requires a serious rider... I guess a person could ride the first half and sag the portion after lunch but some of us are way to proud to sag...
Only one ... A tent for shade, or relocation of the "MC100 courtyard" at ONU. It would have been nice to be in the shade or have a large tent, at the end of the ride Saturday afternoon. It was great to have a beer and watch other riders come in, and would have been better if shaded. Thats the only thing I can think of, so you all did an awesome job of putting this together this year!
Ensure a bit more sag support for 25 & 50 milers on return home. Offer a 5 mile ride for younger kids (to be accompanied by a "sponsor" or adult rider) and they can get donations to, of any amount.
Well . . . . the description of rolling hills would have been more accurate had it said "roller coaster hills." I realize I'm a beginner here, but the hills were much bigger and much more of a challenge than I expected. You could look at rides like this as rides to test your limits on, or as a great social experience. Since long rides are a new experience for me, I'm not sure which category I would rather fit in. Riding down some of the hills was definitely scary, as I felt I was almost out of control and that if any small impediment was in the road, I would have wiped out. I rode all out to make it back up the hills, too. Was I proud of myself for doing it? Of course. But I'm not sure if I need to challenge myself like that whenever I participate in this ride, which I would like to make a yearly event.
The only suggestion I have is regarding the transporting of bikes of Sunday from the lunch stop back to Young's Dairy in Yellow Springs. Our group had to wait between 1 1/2 -2 hours on Sunday to get our bikes picked up and get transported back to Yellow Springs.
I would like to see the volunteers along the route wearing more visible clothing and standing at the crossing letting us know if the road is clear or if there is gravel. Some of the ham radio operators wore bright green vests, which was great. Some volunteers sat in their car near the intersection and were not very visible. I was glad they were there, but would have liked if they were more actively involved.
Possibly add another rest area before the 14 mile mark with just water and gator aide.
I don't know what I would change at this point to make it better.
For riders that are doing the 2 day ride but opt to only do 50+ miles, you need to have another flat bed for the bikes and another van or 2 to take riders to the final stop. We had to find a ride both days and had to wait over 2 1/2 hours on the final day to get back to Youngs.
The only suggestion I have is to improve the end of the ride. That didn't seam to organized and I had expected it to be more of an event. I had my family meet me there, but there was nothing special going on for the riders.
a little more variety for the post ride snacks at Ohio Northern - some salty chips pretzels etc.
have some music at lunch.
Several times I became concerned with support vehicles, both ride related and private, that followed the riders they were supporting. I encountered instances where I was passing a support vehicle and the riders (going left of center). There were also instances when traffic approached from behind and they also had to pass both the vehicle and the riders. I felt quite uncomfortable with these events.
Personally no problems - but did hear from two participants that they felt some of the painted "turn arrows" were marked too close to the actual turn/intersection.
Perhaps better marking. The paint was good, but maybe arrows, signs, etc.
One more port-o-let at the earlier rest stops
Registration was great, support on the ride was great, but it was difficult to find volunteers at Young's at the end of day 2.....which I did not recall being an issue last year...just my opinion.
Make sure all riders check BACK in at the completion of the bike ride (whether in person or by phone.)
Could have used more sun shelters at Ohio Northern, at the conclusion. Possibly have the lunch sooner.
As the ride grows, more thought must be put into transporting riders who stop at lunch to their final destination.
Make me win an Ipod next time.
#1 Less hills. #2 We wore a number on our backs, but it would be nice to have our name printed on them also so we could get to know other riders by name. #3 healthier food at rest stops, like trail mix, whole grain bagels. I am a vegetarian and appreciated the black bean burgers and cole slaw they had for lunch.
The route was more challenging than in past years, but enjoyable. 20 miles between one of the rest stops was a bit of an unanticipated stretch, but doable. I would like to see a sign at each rest stop reminding us of the distance to the next one. I know there is one that indicates how far you have come, but people are focused on the next distance as well. (And yes, I know that it is indicated on the map for those willing to open it up and read.)
I would like to see the road marked a little bit better.
A one day out and back Century would be a nice option to add, for those riders who can't commit to an entire weekend.
Eye level signs for turns
More port a johns especially at the rest areas that have both the one day and two day riders.
a second port a pot at the first rest stop
I didn't use the rest stops. But as I rode past it looked like there was limited shade offered. Maybe bigger or multiple tents to give riders a break from the sun.
The 1st Rest stop is too close to the start. I think they could be placed every 15-20 miles apart. I think the party after the 1st day needs to have more shaded area. Too hot to sit out in the sun. I think a DJ would be a good idea. Better chances to request songs with a variety of interests.
1. at all break areas including lunch have gatorade and multiple porta-potties. One was a painful. 2. The fresh fruit, especailly strawberries was wonderful. I think we all get tired of bananas 3. we waited 3+ hours to get picked up on the last day at the lunch stop. That was our PLANNED stopping point for 2 day 50 mile riders. We ended at 12:30 and had to wait until 3 :30 for the bike trailer to show up, then there weren't enough seats in the car, so we called our friend and he drove all the way up and then back to Youngs for our bikes. Crazy. My suggestion is have more bike trailers and shuttles for something to accomodate the finished riders. Many who signed up to go the whole 80 miles or so, stopped, and didn't finish the tour, thusly causing a huge back up. They should be last to get on the return bus and go, not those who finished what they planned.
Prearranged transportation to/from local area watering holes.
let people know about the markings on the pavement that indicate the route!
The 2nd rest stop area (aka lunch on Sunday) with gravel roads left something to be desired. Also the section of the Power loop that was gravel was less than ideal
more shade opportunity at end. Especially if you want people to stay outside and enjoy music.
It would be great for the one day riders to have a looped route rather than an in/out same route.
Perhaps more massage therapists available after the ride. Maybe they could have a larger room available for them.
Only minor suggestion was I did not like the gravel roads on the power loop.
I think you have it pretty well perfected.
It would be helpful if the way back was better marked. The way out was marked extremely well and the motorcycle help was great! We did the shorter ride and so there wasn't any support (which we understand) but there were a couple times where it was a little difficult to see your way back.
Having a hard time thinking of things that need to be changed.
1. Have the volunteers all wear the same T shirt. Not critical at rest stops, but at intersections it would help. 2. Many volunteers at intersections sat in their cars. I like when the volunteers are out, and indicate whether the intersection is clear. Those that were active and involved at the intersections were helpful, but not always easy to hear. A colored sign (same color every intersection, such as green) that says or indicates "clear", maybe a red color stop sign if not clear) would be nice. 3. Markings were good. At some intersections, it would have been nice to have the first "Y" further from the intersections, such as 100 yards. 4. At the spot where photos of riders will be taken, it would be nice to have a sign about 1/4 mile or so ahead of time. I rode with friends, and would have liked to have been grouped together when we passed the photographer. 5. One rest stop had only one portalet, which slowed things down. 6. I wasn't clear about the start time on Sunday. I think 8am was not the start time, but the time everyone should start by (of course, we were 10 minutes later). It may be that the materials indicated to start any time before 8am or between 7am and 8 am, and I missed it. 7. All the riders were friendly. The volunteers don't control this, but it seemed to me that riders were engaging, friendly. The committee members were very outgoing - each of you seemed more like a host at a party, interested in the riders having a good time. 8. I've not yet looked for the photos on line. It would be nice to have them downloadable, full file size (mega). 9. We purchased socks from last year. I liked having the socks, and wished there were matching socks from this year. 10. Not all SAG vehicles had signs. I hear the woman collecting the magnetic signs at the finish mention that she didn't get them all back, which could be the challenge. 11. The MS150 has riders add personal information to the back of the numbers. I like this, since if there were an incident, a rider might not be able to provide the information. 12. All 104 flavors of Young's Ice Cream would be nice. ;) 13.
Offer two person and 4 person relay rides
toilet line @ rest stop one (at least) was quite long on Saturday a couple of riders were said to have turned away from some fuzzy strawberries - fresh fruit should probably be rinsed off in advance of ride
It would be nice to ride by some interesting landmarks/scenery, rivers, etc. but it is Ohio so that would be quite a challenge in itself. I don't really have any suggestions, I had to dig deep for that one. You're doing a great job. Changing the route to a new destination every year would be great, but I'm sure that's not an easy task to achieve.
The POWER LOOP had a road on it that was UNNECCESSARY about 3-4 miles of nothing but gravel!! What is this all about, I mean are we supposed to get hurt on this road or is that not the intention? This needs to be changed, no roads that are nothing but gravel. Next year's Jersey should be a Yellow & Kelly Green color scheme.
Maybe encourage relay team participation. Two of the scooter guys alternated every 14 miles, which was the only way they could stay anywhere near the main pack. Each rider is assured of fresh legs throughout the ride. This could really catch on with new riders.
Rooms / sleeping arrangements were great. Tops overall for me on the rides that i have traveled on. Perhaps show a movie / projector on a wall inside (could start after supper) or outside, but would have to start later obviously .... just a thought
1)Don't use red and yellow paint to mark the road. One color-blind rider told me he could not distinguish between the two colors. Fortunately he was never alone and could follow riders who could see the colors. 2) Have at least 2 porta pottys and maybe 3 at the first rest stop. Everyone loaded up on coffee, juice and water before the ride began, then had to use the facilities at the first stop. Since it was only 14 miles into the ride, a great number of riders were there at the same time. The wait for our group to get through the bathroom line was at least 30 minutes and that's too long at a rest stop. 3) Have more water and ice available at the rest stops. After riding 40 or 50 miles, cold clean water is much better that water from a spigot or water that is "colored" from something in the cooler. One rest stop was completely out of water, few had ice available.
Need more people to pick up at the end of the day. Bikes and people. Less hills.
well.... i love the whole mark the street with a Y but it is very easy to miss especially when you are just focused on getting up a hill or on traffic. (and maybe a little bit of signs would help motorists be a little more careful around the route. i almost got my head taken off by a passing trucks mirror.)
Maybe more Door prizes? Appoint someone who is good at finalging prizes from corporate doners.
Signs at intersections. As beginners we almost missed a few markers.
There were quite a few tough hills in the 56 mile trek. Not sure I can honestly call those 'gently rolling'.
More of DEAN!

Please tell us how you liked the route to and from Ada; and if you participated in previous years, did you like the route better, about the same, or less than than the previous route?

On day 2, rest stop 2 was confusing. We got there (to the covered area that we used on Day 1 at about 8:50am). The young lady who arrived to set up about 1 minute later was told (over the cell phone) that she was in the wrong place. We then left and saw the rest of the rest stop crew at the baseball diamond about 1/2 mile away. I really didn't like the "Power Loop" route. I went through my 2 water bottles within the first 10 miles and was severely dehydrated by the time I got to ONU. If we use that route next year, I like to see it modified to route it by a gas station, 7-11, or Speedway if possible. One other thing about the route. One of our folks missed a turn near Bellefontaine and ended up 3-4 miles off the route before he figured it out (he went all the way to Rt 68). You might want to check a few of the turns and add some additional markings next year. Lastly, for the rest stops at the picnic areas, there was a place to sit.
Yes, I've participated in previous years. This course was a lot harder than up to Delaware...more hills...but that only makes it a bit more interesting. I think I liked this course better because of that.
I loved the route. I thought it wasn't too challenging, but still made me work at times. Very beautiful countryside. I never saw so many cornfields!
I liked the route better than previous years, but it might be a little tough for less experienced riders
This was my first year so I am unable to compare. However, people I spoke to thought it was harder than the previous year. Those hills were tough and so many of them.
I thought this route was much more fun and interesting than last years route.
The route to Delaware was easier. The route to Ada is a nice change. I prefer the ride to Ada.
Loved it. Keep the hills. Some riders didn't like them, everyone moaned going up them but...boy did iy feel good going over the top.
I thought that overall the route was great. I liked the route a little more than the route to Delaware because there was more variety.
We liked the route better.
Better....although the hills on the second day seemed harder :)
I was challenged by it but really liked the scenery. The headwind the last few miles was not fun but I am glad I pushed through it with my son. The second day seemed easier for some reason. I was surrounded by a good group and they took pity on this 60 year old.
I liked this route better. I found it to be more grueling, but I enjoyed the challenge. The scenery was beautiful, and there seemed to be a few more shady spots.
The feedback I heard was good, many felt it was more difficult than last year's course, with the hills. My ride was shorter, had some hills but was able to avoid the hilliest portion. :) One a side note, I thought the markings for the ride were closer to the intersections instead of earlier as in some of the rally rides.
good variety of terain
Best route so far. I've did this many years and I personally found it to be the best one yet.
1st time for this event - did 60 miles and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The route was beautiful to look at. I haven't ridden in previous years. Many of my friends commented on the fact that the hills were much more than rolling, and it was disconcerting for them. Others found the challenge of the hillls exhilarating and welcomed it.
The route was very challenging but I truly enjoyed it.
The route was very level and there was very little traffic, which I liked. I didn't care for the roads that had the gravelly paving. In some areas there was gravel at the turns. Can that be cleaned up? I found the route well marked. I heard one woman saying she didn't like the map and prefered turn by turn directions. I liked the map and thought is was better than typed directions.
Very nice route
I liked the route. It was a little harder then I had prepared for but that didn't make it bad.
I liked the route but was not expecting the amount of hills, since the brochure said otherwise.
Great route
I enjoyed both routes. I felt the effort was comparable
the snack stop with the Christmas in July theme was lots of fun! riding the one-day, 56 mile trip was hillier tha last year and just fine.
First time with this particular group/event. i liked the route.
"about the same" - it definitely seemed hillier - but very nice overall - and it was nice to ride a completely new route.
I thought the course was PERFECT. Definitely keep the hills!!
The route was much hillier than I expected – I will really need to ramp up my training for next year!
I liked this year's route better than last year...it was a bit more challenging, more 'contour' to the course...less traffic on the roads...although I did like the town of Delaware better.
The route to/from Ada was great. Had a good amount of variation. Nice fast flat with a good mix of some large hills.
One turn wasn't well marked.
Route was very scenic, and much more hilly than last year. Very challenging. This was my 4th tour. It was tough to keep a paceline together. Overall, I liked it as well or better than the previous route.
The route was well supported. It was challenging, and fun. No real issues with traffic.
As I said in the overall comments, I like the route more then last year, just wasn't prepared for the number and degree of the hills.
The route seemed just fine being this my first time
I liked the route less than last year. The hills were a bit much for me. Last year I rode to & from Delaware the whole way, minus the power loop. This year I had to stop at lunch and sag in because of the hills and wind. That was discouraging to me. If the same route is chosen for next year, then I may not participate. I am a marathon runner and only do biking as cross training. I mostly ride on bike paths and so wasn't prepared for this years very hilly ride.
Better as far as challenge Nice change of scenery, although, the previous route was enjoyable
I enjoyed the route.
I loved the route.
This route was better

better - more challenging, but better
First time rider to the Young's event. Enjoyed the route - low traffice, good roads, roads were well marked. The ride to Ada with the rollers were a blast... for some reason those same rollers weren't as friendly on the return trip which is no big deal.
I thought the route was great. Nice scenery and the roads were clearly marked.
I liked the route this year. I like diversity, so this was much better than previous years. Nice to change it up every year if possible. YOu can't please everyone.
It was great. Low traffic, scenic, some rollers - perfect. Better than last year.
Although the route this year was much more challenging (or I was in worse shape), I liked it better than previous years. Better sceanary & less corn fields
Liked the route better. Wish it were slightly shorter to get to the beer tent faster
this was my first ride with YD and I thought the route was great.

This was my first year here. I liked the route better than any I have ridden. I have done the MS 150 for the past 6 years and liked this best. Very low traffic and most roads were in good shape.
First Year, Great route(exception was the gravel roads on the power loop)
First time-Route was great.
We thought the route was great. The traffic was great.
It was a very challenging route, but probably was part of the feeling of accomplishment felt after finishing it. Possibly quite hard for new riders. "Rolling hills" misleading, should have been called "Stumpf rolling hills"
This was my first year. The route was well marked, good mixture of hills and flat.
I thought it was great, but there were more hill's than i expected,Whoever said they were gently rolling.must be from Colorado.
better
I liked the route more than the previous years. It was just a little more interesting and fun. Harder yes, but more fun, definitely!
I didn't participate in last years ride (07) but I feel that the route was good, could have done without some of the hills at the beginning from Young's but a great ride. Challenging, beautiful, peaceful. Great SAG support and rest stops also. The POWER LOOP had a road on it that was UNNECCESSARY about 3-4 miles of nothing but gravel!! What is this all about, I mean are we supposed to get hurt on this road or is that not the intention? This needs to be changed, no roads that are nothing but gravel.
Just marvelous. A little hilly, maybe, but the surfaces were perfect.
I liked it better, different scene. Was a little more challenging than your other route, but that is fine for me.
I liked the route. This is the first time I have participated. Next year you could arrange to have the ride on a day with less wind. (wink)
less than
i loved it. i would just warn people of the hills i would have been fine for the 88 miles but the hills killed me day 2
A bit more hills than last year, but the north to south route was good. The wind was not really much of a factor.

Only did 28 out and back

Very good - The campus was beautiful, and the separate bedroom was a God send to me. I sometimes snore (ha, ha) when I am really tired.......... which I was, so I was able to sleep without worry!
Very good - Great accomodations. Nice to have 2 bathrooms with 5 people in our apartment.

Very good - Excellent. Loved the apartments.
Very good - The beds were comfortable, air conditioning great, spacious, good showers, very friendly people working there, good massages, great to have the ice cream waiting there for us.
Very good - The residence hall was very comfty and relaxing.
Very good - The suite we had was large and clean. There was plenty of room for the bikes and it was nice to have a bed to sleep in. At the MS-150 this year, we camped, which I enjoy, but this was much less work.

Very good - I thought the rooms were very nice. lots of room and a fairly comfortable bed. But after that ride I could have slept on the floor and been ok. LOL.

Very good - I couldn't get accommodations like this for TOSRV or the Horsey 100!!!
Very good - It doesn't get much nicer than that!
Very good - PS. I didn't have any Toilet Paper in my room (can't remember if I was told to pack any or not). Fortunately, I remembered to pack some.

Very good - Would have liked a maid to come in and put my sheets on and turn them down before I went to bed. Kidding! They were great, especially the kitchen and living room area. A common area to watch TV (for the tour!) would have been nice if available.
Very good - What a great place.

Very good - VERY VERY Nice, I felt comfortable in the room that I was in. Hope we are at ONU again next year.
Very good - Probably the best feature of the entire event. Makes TOSRV look like a gulag!

Very good - Dinner was great. Breakfast was acceptable.
Acceptable - When you're trying to come up with choices for a large crowd, this is the type of food that is most readily available. To have more choices or make it more "gourmet," would cost a lot more. The food was fine, as it was not the main reason I went on the ride.
Very good
Very good - The food was tasty and at the right temperature. Buffet lines work great. There was plenty of food. I also liked the door prizes after dinner. I wasn't expecting this. Mostly I liked it because it was fun to watch everyone and they were having a good time.
Good
Good - I could have used a few more carbs at dinner. Breakfast was very good.
Needs improvement - Dinner was very bland and the chicken and the other meat were very dry, the salad had way to much vinegar, a disappointment since last years meals were very good.

Very good - Great although a little late opening for breakfast, though it was indeed worth the wait. Better than typical cafteria college food.
Very good - Couldn't have asked for more. Quite a value!
Very good
Very good - Ran out of brewed coffee at breakfast, there was instant available, but it was instant.
Poor - The chicken was so tough that you had to drink something to get it down. There should have been some type of pasta. Last year's dinner was fantastic.

Good - I think last years meal was better.

Destination events for charitable causes have a wide range of required contributions. Do you feel that the minimum contribution levels for the Young's ride are about right, too high, ~too low
|

About right. Any higher will probably turn away non-corporate riders.
How can you put a cap on such great charities? I would ride no matter what the minimum was.

We did the ride as a whole family...it was hard for us to commit to the total $800 for a weekend, it would be nice if there was a break for multiple people from the same family. We know of at least one other couple that only one spouse went because they couldn't afford for both to go.

Could be a little higher without discouraging participation

I feel minimum level ($200) was just right. It was a struggle to get that. If it was higher I would not be able to ride.

when you ride with multiple people, it is hard to make it higher, we always try to get more, but tend to be right around 400 for the two of us

The maximum we should require
I give other places, the ride up from Cincy is getting expensive, so I feel this keeps us all coming.
About right
I think the contributions should be whatever the riders can get. There shouldn't be a minimum- every little cent helps, so maybe some people didn't come at all because they were daunted by the minimum. I've done charity events before where you could try to raise $ or not, and if you didn't raise the 'minimum' you could still participate with a $50 riding fee. That would work for your one-day event, and be worthwhile to the riders, and still raise $ for the charity.. The more people, the better!
I feel that the 2 day minimum contribution is a bargain, but I'm afraid that any significant increase will discourage participation

The $200 influenced my choice of what ride to do this year. I am not a good fundraiser, so that was enough for me.
About right
About right
The overnight contributions were a little high. We wanted to do the overnight, but didn't feel we could raise that much. It's hard as a married couple to raise quite that much. Maybe a lesser amount for teams?
About right
About right. My comment is that allowing teams to combine their contributions is really great. I don't think it drives down the contributions. For us (Team Tracy) it let us work together to solicit money, since we have many friends in common.
I know a couple who couldn't go because they thought it was too much,i wouldn't increase the pledge, however for what you get, the registration could be up,ed a little .
I think 200 is not asking much, it is an outstanding ride with great support. I wouldn't mind if you raised the minimum contribution, for me it would be worth it, however, newer riders might be detered if they have never been on the ride before. Last year was my first ride for charity that I had to raise money for and 200 sounded pretty intimidating, now I don't think that, but it might be something to consider.

i think that the minimum should be lowered but then make it more of a deal to raise money for the charitys and possibly have more prizes not just for the top fundraisers but more like for certian ranges have a random prize (maybe just youngs gifts but at least something just to encourage people)
leave them alone,to compete with the MS-150. The accomodations and food will bring more riders. Add an easy to donate hyperlink and a form letter that we can use to solicit donations from relatives and friends.

This year, the rally rides were deliberately redesigned to better prepare less-experienced riders with road exposure rather than primarily bike path experience. We would appreciate any comments you have regarding the new approach to the rally rides.
|
Next |
I didn't do any rally rides this year. I did one for the 2007 ride and it was fun. One area that newbies should be aware of is the need to prepare for problems. One of our riders had to help a guy who didn't have a tube or bike pump. On the website, you might want to add a fuller step-by-step prep guide for newbies (physical training, equipment needed, what goes in the pretty bag under your seat, etc.). At the rally rides, a tube changing demo would be good (sounds stupid, but I even had to change a tube for a competitor at the last Caesars Creek triathlon).
I was only able to participate on one and it was the 3rd one....very challenging but, after riding the course, I understand why. I think it's a GREAT idea to get people "hill-prepared."
I only rode on one, but it certainly seemed good.
I like the bike paths the best
No comments come to mind.
The rally rides were a perfect mix of path and road. You are doing the right thing in changing the rides from previous years.
Great. The gradually increasing distances helped too.
Unfortunately, I was not able to participate in any of the rally rides, but I believe that the road exposure is better preparation.
That was a great idea. The bike path really doesn't give the challenge/training needed to prepare for the ride.
I only made 2...but they were good. Heard good comments about the others.
I know the original route was changed and feel you were in the ballpark concerning difficulty. Keep it pleasant.
The road exposure concept was an excellent idea! I was able to participate in 3 of the four Training Rides. Due to the fact that I wasn't able to train much on my own this year, the road exposure did wonders for me. The last one that was 60 miles on the road gave me the confidence to know that I would be able to make the big ride even with the limited amount of training that I had done on my own.
Good rally rides. Great support. I rode 2 of the rally rides, both were well done. They were well marked, I like the fact that the markings were early on before the intersections, helpful for the new rider.
Best route! Car traffic was minimized and we had no problems.
Great exposure for newbies to road riding.
This was my first year, but the idea of the rally rides was perfect. I had ridden primarily on bike paths and road riding can be a very scary prospect. I'm from Cincinnati, and had known of the two riders who were killed by a drunk and drugged motorist. So I'm very conscious about the need to know what you're doing on a road ride. To me, the rally rides the way you did them was invaluable.
It was a very good approach.
I did not participate in any of the rally rides, but wish I had because it would have been fun.
Bike path would be fine. I know you try to limit hills but there were a few that were brutal for inexperienced riders.
Good JOb
I only rode the last one and thought it was laid out very nicely. I wish I had known about the ride earlier so I could have ridden all of them.
Really enjoyed the rally rides I thought they were well run
Maybe some closer to Cincinnati if you get get another group going.
rally rides were great
rally rides were progressive in their length and time on roads; I think this encourages more riders to commit to the event ride.
I registered quite late and decided to do the last rally ride with a friend who is getting back into cycling. He hadn't ridden the roads much and was hoping for some advice along the ride. As the rides were promoted to aid those who need road experience, he was surprised as the pack rode off at their own speeds. I suppose if he had attended the ride by himself, he would have addressed this issue before starting, but he did question me if this was the norm and I had to say yes.
The committee's approach was a sound one - nice job!
N/A
Unfortunately I was unable to participate in the Rally Rides. And I frequently train on the roadways.
Unfortunately I have been unable to participate in any of the rally rides due to various schedule conflicts, but I certainly concur that road exposure is essential for preparing for this ride.
Would like to see more riders attend, so we could get them hooked in. It was nice to switch the routes up.
I only went on the 60 mile rally ride, next year I hope to go on more, I think it's great that you provide these rides for people.
I'm one of those. I found the route pleasant, did not kill myself (I completed the full ride)
I only did one rally ride but thought it was great.
I participated in a rally ride for the first time on the 60 mile ride. I immediately felt welcome and felt the road exposure is definately better than the bike path to prepare for hills. The rally ride was the longest ride that I did for the year, and I felt prepared for the 176 mile ride two weeks later.
I like the riding on the road vs. the bike path. Good job.
I liked the idea but I did not participate. I live on the westside on Cincinnati so they were a little to far away for me.
Seems very proactive, and I would have taken advantage of them, but could not due to scheduling conflicts on most Saturday mornings.
I wasn't able to attend any of the rally rides.
great idea, I like the way it is marked because we were actually able to ride parts of them a couple of times
I did not particpate in the rally rides. However, I do agree pre-event organized rides should be for the benefit of less experienced riders to prepare them for the actual event.
I liked the ride. I don't think I would enjoy it if it is on a bike path.
Keep up the Rally Rides as you did...They were a perfect preparation and exposure. YOu accomplished the objective. Thanks for these.
Did not participate.
Rally rides were much better. I seldom ride the paths
Good idea, especially with the climbing on the actual route.
sorry did not participate so can't comment
No bike path is always great. Road work is important for strength training.
Did not participate.
I usually prefer bike path to road but for this type of event, I think the roads work out very well. Given that it takes place over the weekend, paths might have slower traffic to contend with.
I did not attend the rally rides. Great idea. I heard many people talk about them.
I didn't do the rally rides, however i doubt they were tough enought.
Much more appropriate
Did not attend rally rides.
I didn't ride in any of the rally rides but am definitely going to next year.
I made two of the rally rides and they were excellent.
The rally rides were great. But they did not prepare for the hills that we had this year.
didnt do any
I really liked the rally rides, but they should be more for recruiting riders, encouraging them to do the 2-day ride... Oh the price of a couple of powerbars??!!
Next year we will plan on riding in them. Riding on the road is obviously different than on the bike path!
Gosh...I didn't notice them. I am a path rider and this was my first major road event. Perhaps I should have tried to participate in these as it would have helped me learn the ropes.
LOVE THOSE BOYS THAT DESIGNED THE RALLY ROUTES!

If you participate in other organized athletic events, please tell us how the Young's ride compares to others, and in particular what you might like changed.
|
Next |
It compares pretty evenly with this year's TOSRV. The after ride fun is better than TOSRV or MS150.
I have done several other organized rides, none are overnights. This is, by far, my favorite. The rest areas are great, the riders are much more friendly and it feels more inclusive than some other rides.
Best event of it's class
I've rode in the Annie Oakley and Mohican. The Young is the best
About the same.
I work as a volunteer at the Ohio Valley MS150 rideevery year, and there they have a bike shop sponsor for each rest stop. It is a much bigger event, but this year the accommodations were scaled down and I think that is why participation was lower than last year.
More personal due to smaller size (than say the MS150 rides).
N/A
I think that Young's ride is very well organized and the support is great. It is a very fun event to participate in.
Very good. Pavement marked well, great support along the course. Although the second day seemed a little less "special"...water stops were just there...not energetic like first day. Took a LOONG time to get a ride back to Young's from lunch....
My only other experience with this sort of thing has been in Charity Walkathons. However, I know people who have participated in this event, as well as others, and I hear nothing but great comments about this one. It ranks right at the top.
The level of support is tops. I heard a comment from a first timer of Young's who said he's been in many tours in Ohio and surrounding states and has never experienced this level of support: mechanical support, rest stops, meals and accomodations before. That makes us stand out!!
N/A
It was very organized. The course was well marked. Maybe you could eliminate a hill or two from the course for next year.
I did the Vandalia Freedom ride 7/4/08 and the MS-150 on 7/12&13/08. The Vandalia ride cost $10 or $20. It was a 100K ride and was not a charity ride. Water bottles and bracelets were given to all participants, which was nice. T-shirts and lunch cost extra. Jerseys were not available. It was a nice ride, despite the rain. The MS-150 was large, well organized, but somewhat impersonal. We camped at the Lebanon YMCA and did 2 loops. The ride was well supported. Minimum donation was $300 per person done on line. The on line donation was slick. It was easy to do and to keep track. They displayed a rolling list of who donated and the amount. I don't know if that is a good idea or not. I recommend Young's keep on-line donations. Judy did a good job of keeping riders current regarding donations.
Very good support.K&G and Kettering bike shops did an exellent job.
better than the modified MS-150 format
top 10. Couldn't improve it much unless you could control the natural elements. But then you wouldn't have any stories to tell. With each repeat of story, the sun gets hotter, the wind gets stronger, the hills get higher, the fish get bigger.
my other events are running events - as for this ride - I honestly feel that as the committee tweaks the details year by year, this event continues to improve.
This is probably one of the best ones.
This is the first time I have ridden on the “Young’s Dairy Ride”. Up until this year, I have participated in the MS 150. The reason I switched to your ride, was mainly because of the route that was chosen for the MS this year: the start location was in one of the worst traffic areas in the area – very, very, dangerous, and very, very, hilly! Also, the MS did not have overnight accommodations, and raised the pledge amount and registration. I know that these events are really about the charities, not just the bike ride, but when you ride this distance, you need your “creature comforts”.
I have participated in a number of Cycling Tours, and Young's is the best supported, most fun tour I have ridden...most fun I've had for $45.
I participate in numerous other rides, but none are as well organized and smoothly run as this one.
This is the best!
I have participated in many marathons and I think it's hard to compare the two since they are very different. But, I do think it's great that you provide a bike machanic at the stops and the support for both the years I've done this ride has been tremendous.
Much better than all others (but I do not have a lot of experience)
Can't think of anything right now.
n/a
I've never been at an event with better support. Motorscycles, radio guys, SAG & rest stop volunteers all seems to be having as much fun as the riders.
Most photos would be nice. For example, a lot of running races have professional photographers who take photos of each rider (you need to have you number clearly visible) and then you can order copies of the photos.
The Youngs ride was well organized. I liked getting the e-mail prior to the event with the course map. That was a huge plus.
This is a well organized ride. Registration was efficient. Luggage delivery was easy.
check-in keeps getting better and better - GREAT JOB
The organization of the Young's ride was outstanding. You covered all the basics.
I think it compares great to the other organized rides that I have done.
Ride in general was well supported...That is a peace of mind, so thank you. The food and potty breaks at the 12-15 mile intervals are critical and SAG and KG did a fantastic job!! I have served on boards of Charity organizations....I would strongly encourage the organizations to really put themselves out there, support the riders like the care, and show appreciation with better food, drinks, etc at every rest stop. AFterall, the $$$$ go towards their financial well being, not only as an organization but employees as well. They may not want to hear it, but that's the truth.
Nothing.
The ham radio support was excellent- there were guys around the important turns. But the route was not as obviously marked (the yellow Y's didn't stand out, you really had to look for them). Being able to use the facilities afterwards was a great idea- I think it brought more families into the event.
I is one of the best I have experienced.
More Ice Cream! No really, everything is great. Route support is fantastic! Young's is great to us.
I am hard pressed to find something to criticize in this ride.
Great don't change it
Young's is extremely well organized and supported making it a terrific intro to charity rides.
Compared to the other rides we've done this year, we felt that the Young's ride had a lot more support. It was wonderful!
If I do only one organized ride next year, this will be it. I liked the close feeling of the group. It was great having a gathering point at the finish in Ada. I liked the dinner and program, particulaly the program. The free photos, WOW, what a nice thing. And free beer (I don't drink) but it sends the message that it is one big group of riders - not an organization putting on a ride and profiting every time it can (e.g., MS150). I liked the low key entertainment, not too loud, just right. It was a very family friendly ride. Judy Fowler and Dan Young were great to work wth. I spoke with both several times before hand about accomodations, jerseys, etc. Very very nice to do.
IT's the best ive been on,the only thing i would add would be a relay for people who want to go all the way, but can't.
I think it's the best supported ride I've ever been on. I've only done a couple other events and this one blows them out of the water. All the other events were one day rides, never two. So unfortunately, I can't compare it that well. Great event overall in my opinion.
This ride was great I will be recommending it to all of my friends and I am looking forward to next years ride. I am going to be riding with a friend next year so it should be very fun and interesting.
I really like this ride / always try to plan my vacation away from this weekend
The other events that I participate in annually have better overnight facilities, usually a lodge or resort hotel, better equipped rest stops, more 'exotic' destinations, and speakers that talk about the charity or the disease for which we are riding. However, the fundraising required is 20 times more than the Young's requirement. I don't think I'd really change anything though, the whole experience from start to finish - rally rides through the BIG ride - was just excellent. I really thought the massages were outstanding!
The food, and pick up service.

Take a lesson from the Flying Pig Marathon... It is one of the best marathons in the country, and that is what attracts runners. A friendly but challanging track, with great support and perks!!!!
I run (HA!) 5K events also. Speedy Feet is the best in that area...and this event was on par with the support and style that Speedy Feet bring to 5K events.
YOUNG'S RIDE ROCKS , OTHERS SUCK HIND QUARTERS
Check-in seemed much smoother with the packets already together.

Did you find the on-line registration process to be simple and effective? If you have any comments on the registration process, we would appreciate hearing them:
|
Next |
Open-Ended Response
There should be a way to buy stuff without having to register for the ride.
That was great. Anything on-line is awesome.
The on-line registration was fine. The only issue is that the $200 min automatically populated. I did not know I was to remove it since I was collecting checks and cash. My credit card was billed for the $200. However, when I asked about it I was told they would resend me a check.
I thought it was easy enough, and I didn't hear of any donors having trouble with it, Judy Fowler always let me know when donations were submitted in my name.
I had a team "lead" do all our registration, so it was painless! : ) Thanks, much, to all the volunteer organizers and the charity organizations, and especially Young's.
Yes
I found the on-line registration process very easy.

Yes
Yes, it was very user friendly.
I have never registered on-line.
Yes, no problems, Judy is awesome.
Yes, very easy on line registration.
Yes, but not user friendly to have sponsorships done - did the Arthritis walk at Youngs, and that site easily walked me through how to create my own Athritis donations page and send it via email to get donations online. A great option. If there was one like that for this event, I did not find it.
The online registration process was very clear and logical to negotiate. The information from your emails, on the webiste, etc. was great. My only other comment was that your maps of the route did not enable you to look at the exact road names because the green "bubbles" covered the road names. To blow the map up to find the road names prevented printing one map. Printing every screen of the blown-up map was not practical. I'm still looking at a map and trying to figure out exactly where we rode.
It was very helpful and simple to use.
Yes. Registration went very smoothly on line and at Young's. Unfortunately the web site had problems with the link to the on line donations on Friday before the ride and that was inconvenient. Judy sent me a direct link that worked great.
I am a computer geek so I loved the online registration. It was very simple and easy to follow. All the forms that I needed were available online so I didn't have to try and find them or someone to get them from.
Yes, but having a better way to get on-line contributions would be helpful.

simple and effective...
easy-breezy.
online registration process is simple enough.

The online registration was quite easy and very convenient.
Yes, fast and easy.
I didn't experience any hitches in the online registration. Received e-mail acknowledgement and thank you promptly.
On line was simple and quick.
yes - no other comments.
Just fine

Very user friendly
Loved the online experience. I also loved the fact that Judy Fowler would email me directly after a contribution was made. I could then go directly to the person to say "Thanks for your support!"

liked being able to use a credit card - nice and easy
It works.
That worked out fine.
it was acceptable. it would be nice to be able to go in and see "by team" who has signed up. Thanks for all the work and effort you put in to make this a fun event. Keep changing, keep creating, ....it's what makes it enjoyable
Easy.
Yes, registration was a breeze-- especially the day of the event. With all those CRG folks at the desks, there was hardly any wait, and it was very organized. Kudos to them!

Well, for two years running I've experienced problems. BUT, the staff always is exceptional in getting me registered!
Yes.......it was easy to follow, although I never really saw that people could pledge online. but was told that they could. My folks just sent me checks.
It was great also
Perfect.
It was actually easier to register online than to register by mail. I struggled to find information on who to make the check out to so we registered online instead.
Being able to register more than one person in the same screen would be helpful. For example, children and spouses. Perhaps a "family registration" form? Might also make it less confusing for rooming, for example when families want to room together, instead of typing it in the box for rooming preference, the volunteer would know to put the family together. Not sure if this is possible. Other than that, form is good.
Registration was easy. On line contributions needs some improvements. We had sponsors that couldn't donate because the on line donation did not work right before the ride.
That was fine and very simple.
Very simple. No comments... keep up the great work. I'll be back every year.
Great job, I wish for the online donations that we (the rider) would get an email when someone donates with our name attached so we can use this information in our fundrasing efforts. Just a thought but I think it would be a great idea.
Yup, no problems there.
Worked fine for me ... I prefer the online way.
It was simple and effective. Job well done.
The registration was great but it would be nice to be able to see if you have any donations sent in, in your name instead of Judy having to e-mail to let you know you have donations. That is more work for her.
a very good system
It worked pretty well.
On-line registration went very smoothly.
YES! No comments at all there.
